We just recently got back from a High Sierra trip and although I must have seen this 100 times, I thought to myself how many may have not and might find it interesting.  Geologists rank it as one of the world’s finest examples of columnar basalt. It's columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.   Every quake that shakes the area, drops more pieces of basalt as you can see below the formation.  The top is polished smoooooth as glass from a glacier long ago.  Every column is different varying from 3 sides to 8 sides.  Anyways, thought you might want to see, I'm sure many have before.  For those that have not, here's Devil's Postpile National Monument, close to where I go every year to get away from it all for a spell.

I am trying to get a full image in my head.... Sprite... how big are those pieces of the Devil's postpile? They look to be about 2-3 feet long and about 6-12 inches in diameter. Am I right ?

They are about one to three feet in diameter and from 3-5 feet long (the pieces at the bottom), they break off weekly at least, and every time there is a quake (which is often, this area is on the west side of Mammoth mountain which is a dormant volcano (fumaroles are around and there are quakes daily here).

My dear Sprite-
I am very familiar with the quakes in California. Living their my whole life would give you that familiarity. That is amazing that the pieces in that picture are that long. How often do you actually go to this sight. Do you see it every year? Month?

Re: Pegasus... The height of the formation is about 60 feet high, and maybe 250 feet wide although it's wider if you count the minor postpiles to it's left.

Re: Irish...  I hike by it twice a year at least.  It's very near a main JMT north and south trailhead that goes many different places (lol all uphill bleh).  I'd love to cross country ski down to it in the winter to get some snowy pics of it, that would be a 30 mile round trip on skis however as they close the gates at 5pm on Samhain eve for the season.  It gets between 10 and 20 foot of snow a year, making the season very short (2 months of summer here basically)

Going back in Sept. with my girls Cheesy

Wow, that is a great picture. I'd love to go see those in person.

Love is so painful when you love someone more than life but he wont ever try to make love work for me why can my love not see the way this should be. love is for two not one i wish i could forget the love i have for him as he did for me. but yet i still long to simply her his sweet voice telling me of his lost love for me. he loves me no question but why does he fear my love even hide from it?
