We just recently got back from a High Sierra trip and although I must have seen this 100 times, I thought to myself how many may have not and might find it interesting.  Geologists rank it as one of the world’s finest examples of columnar basalt. It's columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.   Every quake that shakes the area, drops more pieces of basalt as you can see below the formation.  The top is polished smoooooth as glass from a glacier long ago.  Every column is different varying from 3 sides to 8 sides.  Anyways, thought you might want to see, I'm sure many have before.  For those that have not, here's Devil's Postpile National Monument, close to where I go every year to get away from it all for a spell.

Sprite do they ever harvest the basalt?

No, the area went under Federal protection in 1911 and was made a national monument because miners wanted to exploit the minerals in the area, including the Basalt at the Postpile.  Originally it was part of Yosemite National Park but the federal goverment reduced the size of Yosemite's national park protection in the late 1800's which allowed the miners to attempt a claim to harvest minerals in the area.   Thankfully this was stopped by the parks induction into the National Monument system.

Yes very fortunate!  Imagine if they had their way none of that would exist today, how sad would that Be!

Now that you say it was part of Yosemite National Park, I know what part of the country it is more or less located.  Not knowing USA very well I was trying to picture where it was, instead of being less lazy and getting out my atlas LOL.

We are planning two trips to USA, one the east coast the second the west coast.  The east coast is the one we will do first due to the fact I am going to a seminar in May, so west coast will have to wait a year.  I hope to take my husband to Yosemite, and Yellowstone park with the Grand Tetons as well.  I was so taken with the beauty my first trip there, that I would love to share it.

I have heard volumes on Yosemite and would love to see and explore this area with my husband as well.  I am after all a country girl at heart!  Cheesy

Thanks, Sprite, too beautiful to be named after something bad--should be the Godess' temple or something. Have you ever been to Sedona--I am curious about the Bell Rock--

Thanks,

Wendy

Yes I've been to Sedona AZ, there's good mountain biking near Bell Rock.  Its beautiful although I don't have any pics.  I do like Cathedral rock and snoopy rock better, but it's just a wonderful area.  Flagstaff is one of my favorite cities in the entire USA.

If you are looking for gorgeous, the most beautiful place in the USA in my opinion is Glacier National Park in Montana, near the CA border.  Not sure if you can get up that far but its WELL worth the effort.  Avalanche Lake area particularly and Logan pass is nice if you can see it, every time but once Ive been there in August and it has SNOWED lol.

Glacier is my favorite national park, followed by Yellowstone.  Yellowstone has so many animals (herds of elk and bison come to mind) and geyser activity that one couldn't possibly get bored.

Yosemite is awesome, just bored with it as I see it too many times (much like the postpile).  If you goto Yosemite, make sure to get to Glacier point, best view in the west coast IMHO.

BB

BTW The Tetons are spectacular.
