I know what the reaping/ sowing cyclical nature of the Wheel of the Year represents, but what does it represent Astronomically and/ or astrologically? Does anyone know or know of a source?

Wow I actually couldn't find anything that was actually factual. There are a couple of things you can find by googleing, but not too much. some of it is hocus pocus junk. You have to really dig for it.

I know right? It's a pretty popular topic too!

You mean the solar holidays, the solstices and equinoxes?  They mark the points at which the sun is at its most northern and southern points in its apparent yearly path across the sky, and when it crosses the equator.  The times are determined astrologically and serve as the official beginnings of the seasons by our modern calendar.

The vernal equinox (Ostara) is the time the sun moves into the first astrological house, Aries.
The summer solstice (Midsummer) moves it to the fourth house, Cancer.
The autumnal equinox (Mabon) moves it into the seventh house, Libra.
The winter solstice (Yule) the sun crosses into the tenth house, Capricorn.

The other holidays mark the midpoints of these times and are known as the cross quarter days.

(edit:  To clarify, these are the traditional western astrological divisions, not the sidreal.   The constellations themselves have shifted relative to the year over the centuries due to the precession of equinoxes.  Today the vernal equinox is near the cusp of Aquarius, not Aries, hence the term "Age of Aquarius." )

Just a bit more detailed point about the cross-quarters. The midpoint occurs at 15 degrees of whatever sign they happen to be in. There are traditional days of celebration for them, but the true date occurs at 15 degrees of it's astrological sign.
