Merry Meet, so I'm moving to the sticks country city nothing there, few witches. I was begging the Goddess and my spirit guide to not let me be Solitary (it works for many but I have a hard time growing alone) and I was on Second Life (virtual world). I found a virtual coven thats about to start on there, the one member said its about intent. What is your opinion on virtual covens?

Hey this used to irritate me! All you people giving me negative karma. I really tried to get my karma back but I don't care anymore, because I have a lot better Karma in rl than you do to be just cursing me over nothing. I haven't been breaking rules and stuff enough. Either way don't care I'm out helping poor people in anyway I can, going through struggles, and I think who's better. Someone who's taking the time to curse me on a forum or someone who doesn't curse people over stupid things Blessed Be!

My own opinion is that they don't work very well.  It's difficult enough to form the group mind in ritual when everyone is together.  Trying to work in different areas, while trying to type - I can't see it.

Additionally, if the coven is a teaching coven, I cannot see how hands on training can be done.  Energy work is best tought with the teacher and student together.

I suppose some people can work that way. I couldn't.

I can't possibly see how this could work a lot of Wicca is SUPER hands on. I just can't work out how this could be accomplished.

This is the first I've heard of a virtual coven in over 10 years. Back then I couldn't imagine them possibly working and have never tried one. Now it seems to me that they'd still be pretty popular these days if they actually worked. Since it's been over 10 years since I've heard of any I have to assume that they are actually quite rare instead. In my opinion that speaks volumes as to it's efficacy.

Possible, of coarse! I've heard of a couple that have and are working, although, this is through the grapevine and I don't know how legitimate my resources are.
But in a very strange way, even though we all here are on a unique path, I feel like you guys are my family.

To each his own.

There will probably be no typing everything in Second life is your actual voice. It will have a virtual altar, our avatars will probably have magickal tools. I understand the hands on thing, they do offer teaching, possibly one on one too. I am kinda skeptical though of this system, I know the one has been a HP for over 20 years in real life. Thanks for all your input I'm hoping this will work

It is hard for me to wrap my mind around a "virtual coven"   I am never going to believe that they are the same as a live and in person coven.

Still from the sidelines they fill some needs.

Consider trying to build your own in person group? Just because they are not out in sight does not mean that they are not there.

Like a coven? I've thought of that but I will need to find an experienced Wiccan to be the high priest first

If you decide to try the Virtual Coven please let us know how it works out.  I've heard of one online (through some blog posts) and it seems to work out for the group.  I believe there are many more that fizzle out, however.  If you get the right group of people with a lot of dedication, it may work for certain things.  And give you a sense of belonging and community.

Again though, let us know how it works out.  Wink

I have to agree with Ken Ra.
In my opinion, calling this "virtual coven" a group would be more accurate.

I agree Phoenix calling it a group is far more accurate.

When I was first drawn to Wicca I asked several witches on this sight if the forum could be considered a type of coven; but after almost 4 years of practicing I see now how hands on it is. If you want a coven it will come. I've been recently trying to put a few close pagan friends together to form a coven and only have one prospect. Blessed be.

Why? There have been plenty of people who saw the need and steeped up and built a Coven.  All it takes is a near infinite tolerance for emotional pain  and an ability to learn from trouble.  99% of coven management is reactive and not proactive. If you really want it you CAN do it.

On the other hand, you could try to just have an open mind where practicing solitary is concerned as you do about joining a virtual coven. One of the reasons there are so many solitaries is that there just isn't a viable group in their area for them to take part in. If a group is what you want, whether it be virtual or face to face I see no reason not to pursue it, but I'd also just suggest doing it with an open mind toward practicing solitary should these other options not work out. There is, after all, something to be said about the self-reliance required for, or rather developed by, taking all the roles in the rituals you perform.
