I am glad I stumbled upon this thread...there are so many good suggestions on here, and I will definitely be picking some of them up as soon as I can. I would suggest the "Blue is for Nightmares" books as well. I have read all four in the series and they good.

The Dead Witch Walking Series by Kim Harrison, are really good I am waitini for the next book with bated breath. The Hollows Trilogy by Nora Roberts is also good reading. The Mists of Avalon is one of my favourite books also.
I *love* the Rachel Morgan series! Dead Witch Walking is such a great book. I haven't read the Hollows trilogy, but I did read the Circle trilogy by Nora Roberts, and they were really great. Mists of Avalon = one of the best books in existence, if one were to ask me.

I have agree with you, Firesong. I tried reading Twillight and I just couldn't get through it. It is definitely geared towards teenage girls. And, I'm not a teenage girl.
It really is, but I have heard a lot of middle aged housewives raving about it as well. It's so strange to me, because the characters are so juvenile and ill portrayed.

I read the Twilight series, but I didn't think they were very good. I just couldn't get over the fact that the whole story centered around a girl who was basically just trying to choose between boy #1 and boy #2. Bella needed to get on with it and get a life.
The thing that irritated me the most about the whole thing was how Bella was supposedly this smart, mature, male-drawing girl but she became petulant and childish the moment one showed her any attention. All the other characters were petty and irritating. They're just so unlikeable. When Stephenie Meyer makes the slightest attempt to give her any real depth, it comes off as forced and completely at odds with the nature that she previously exhibited. Moreover, she spends so much time trying to make Bella seem "different" that the other characters she has created are even more transparent and annoying. It's just this circle of ridiculous wishy washy characters.
So true. I read the series and it's pretty horrible all the way around. There isn't a plot, character development...you know, nothing to really LOVE about it. Edward is emotionally abusive, and Jacob is a full on pedophile - Bella is shallow, and likes both of them because they're attractive. Outside of that, the writting is horrible, and the portrayl of love is pure teenage lust. It also has bad morals that I hope our generation can see past in given time.
On that note...
I read the first book of the Marked series, and it was pretty bad, so I don't reccommend it.
I just finished reading the last book of Sweep, and it's my favorite series I've read. I agree that it's not accurate, but hey, fiction doesn't have to be completely accurate. I reccommend it! Very addicting.

The problem with the
Twilight
series is that it reads like a Mary Sue fanfiction of some other book. The rivalry between Jacob and Edward is so over-the-top venomous that I keep expecting it to turn out to be a cover. She could walk in on the two of them in bed together and it would be completely consistent with the tone of the book.

When I was younger I read a series of books which really 'spoke' to me and I've just found out the author lol
Lisa J Smith also writes the Vampire Diaries series, I'm looking for the trilogy called 'The Secret Circle', the 3 parts are 'The Initiation'; 'The Captive' and 'The Power'.
I've looked on ebay and all sorts, does anybody know where I can get copies of these?

Just in case anyone didn't know, theres another book in the Sweep series after the 14th book called
Night's Child
. I loved the series, and I hadn't know about the last book until recently, so I just figured I would put that out there for anyone else who loves the series and didn't know either.
The book is told from both Morgan and Moira (her daughters) point of view, and I thought it was really very good.

I've seen them in the bookstore; now that her series
Night World
(which is what Twilight could have been if Myers actually knew how to write; that is to say, it's not a terrible series) and
Vampire Diaries
have become so popular, all her books are more readily available. If they don't have it on the shelves, I bet they can order it in for you.
Anyway, the
Night World
books have partially realistic witches in some of the stories. Most of them are about Vampires though. I'm not usually a vampire reader, but my friend gave me the first one for Christmas and (after getting past a thoughoughly unbelievable opening bit in the first story of the first book) I read all nine stories in ten days. And now I have to wait for the last one
Other witchy-type books: Anne Bishop's
Pillars of the World
series is alright. She's a decent writer (I LOVED
Sebastian
and
Belladonna
) but for some reason the first book of the Pillars series is really predictable. I've figured most of the stuff out already and I'm STILL waiting for the characters to catch up, but
We'll see. It's set in an alternate past, where a non-Christian force is hunting down all the witches in the land, and the Fey (both the little people and the High Faeries) tie into it. Note: NOT a young adult book by any means.

I'm actually reading a book that's part of another Wiccan series by Cate Terinan called Balefire. It's about two twin sisters who were separated at birth. It's really good. :]

Awesome visual!! And then it turns into Underworld, nice. Thanks for that, Daecon, lol. Bb shortie, I love all of Marion zimmer Bradley's books. There are actually books that lead up to Mists of Avalon. Good reading.

I really like Omega by Stewart Farrar. It's a post-apocalyptic novel. I think it is out of print but I found an old copy on-line. They do plan to re-release it in the next year or two.
That sounds like a book my father was telling me about, a coven of witches who survive and basically become world leaders after an apocalyptic war which rids the world of technology/electricity/modern conveneinces, and since the coven was earth based and lived on nature they knew how to survive. Not sure how accurate it is since I havent read it myself, but he says there are 4 or 5 books in the series. I'll see if I can find out the name!

I'm reading that one now, actually. I liked
Sebastinan
and
Belladonna
the best though. The world she created in that series was amazing.
